ABOUT ME
So my story is of a typical kasi-bred musician. My musical journey started at church in the mid 2000s. I was always surrounded by people who played gospel piano because of my brother having a piano at home and constantly having people over playing gospel. I picked up piano around 2007-2008 and started teaching myself how to replay what my brother was playing.
In high school I ventured more into jazz. I started a youth jazz band (the 1st in Queenstown) under the supervision of Mr Mbebe (bassist) and the Queenstown arts center. I began to teach my friends how to play simple jazz piano as I was now more fascinated by the bass guitar. I then took up bass guitar in 2010 and continued performing bass with the youth band.
My drumming only came later after I was watching a rehearsal of a Jazz band in Queenstown which had Thulani “Frank” Funeka on drums and I was blown away by how unorthodox his style was, but still sounding like nothing I’ve heard before. After that rehearsal, I picked up the broken sticks that were laying around the Arts Centre, and taught myself how to coordinate what was in my head to what’s in my hands. 5yrs later, I was playing with everyone and exploring different genres from Jazz, reggae, gospel, pop rock and soul.
When I got accepted to study at NMMU I knew exactly what I wanted to do and I had a mental discography of what artists I would love to play for in the jazz scene.
While in university, I met Roscoe Nefdt, who introduced me to punk music and I joined the band Undead Generation in 2018. Since then we have released multiple EPs and albums, and we have toured around South Africa. My journey with Undead Generation broadened my musical and cultural perspective.
Around the same time started a jazz group called Afrogroove in Motherwell, which gave a platform to new artists who are now tour professionally.
Currently, I am working with Zamani Mbotho in a production called “The Witch and the Nun”. I was invited to perform with well-known vocal group Legato for their Appreciation Tour 2025. Pursuing my passion for jazz, I continue working on my own projects – so watch this space for upcoming performances and releases.
